The Year of the White Metal Rat (庚子年) has started anew in 2020. As it is the year which symbolizes great fortune(多福) due to the rat’s high fertility and survival ability, there will be many readers preparing to place vitamins on their dinner tables for the health of their families.

Vitamin invigorates your body’s health. As much as it is beneficial to the body, vitamin’s type and effects are of countless variety. Then, what impact does vitamin have on our skin health?

CARD 1. Vitamin A: Skin Elasticity

Vitamin A, also known as Retinol, is an ingredient for wrinkle improvement functional cosmetics which effectively removes excessive dead skin cells and quickens production of new cells.

During this process, vitamin A creates skin cells like collagen and elastin to improve skin wrinkles.

However, because vitamin A can be rather irritative, only a small amount must be mixed in with general cosmetics in case of sensitive skins and then that amount must be increased little by little to maintain skin stability.

Furthermore, when applying near relatively thin skin layers such as those around the eye, the user has to be careful. Furthermore, since the structure can be made unstable due to light and heat, it is better to apply vitamin A at night more than day.

Card 2. Vitamin B3: Improves the Skin Tone

Vitamin B3, which is indicated as ‘Niacinamide,’ is an ingredient for whitening functional cosmetics and a representative of all whitening components.

Compared to vitamin C, vitamin B3 uses a different mechanism which disturbs the path of melanin moving above the epidermis and improves the skin tone, thereby producing skin whitening effects.

Unlike vitamin C, vitamin B3 is less irritable to the skin and passes easily through the dead skin cell layer, so it has a high skin absorption rate and can be used relatively safely even for sensitive skins.

Additionally, it also heightens the skin protective function which grows weaker with age, thereby preventing the skin from becoming too sensitive.

Because it is also safe under heat or light, there is no need to distinguish night from day for its usage.

CARD 3. Vitamin B5: Moisturization and Skin Regeneration

Known as ‘panthenol,’ vitamin B5 has a high liquid cohesive force, effectively maintaining the moisture level and aiding skin moisturization as well as skin soothing.

Furthermore, it stimulates the cells and quickens cell division to help skin regeneration. Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, it also has a strong skin mediating and protecting capacity.

As a result, vitamin B5 is not only used to improve the skin but also to moisturize the scalp and provide nutrition.

CARD 4. Vitamin C: Antioxidative and Whitening Effect

As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C removes reactive oxygen species to excel at delaying skin aging and whitening the skin.

It inhibits the enzyme that produces the melanin, thereby making the dull skin more lively.

However, due to the nature of becoming oxidized easily in the air and its large molecular structure, its absorption rate is reduced.

Because of its unstable structure, it is used separately as pure vitamin C and vitamin derivatives. If your skin is sensitive, choose the vitamin derivatives. If your skin is relatively healthy, choose the pure vitamin C. For both types, small quantities must be finished in a short period of time.

CARD 5. Vitamin E: Antioxidative Effect

Also called ‘tocopherol,’ vitamin E is effective in preventing skin aging since it protects the skin from the harmful environment and pollution with its outstanding antioxidative effect.

Furthermore, it blocks moisture evaporation, making the skin moist and glossy.

It is recommended to use vitamin E for dry skin or for periods of dry skin cell formation. Additionally, because vitamin E is weak when under heat, light, or oxygen, it must be stored in a cool area and must not be exposed to the outside light for a long time.

Card 6. Vitamin D: Moisturization and Psoriasis Treatment

Vitamin D is a representative fat soluble vitamin and is also called ‘calciferol.’

It is effective in preventing moisture evaporation by forming a skin protecting barrier and is widely used for psoriasis treatment due to blocking abnormal cell division of dead skin cells.

Around 90% of Korean people who actively avoids ultraviolet rays are said to be lacking vitamin D, so let us secure our inner and outer health by paying more attention to all vitamins we eat and apply on our skin.

Vitamin, diverse but nothing to waste!

If you have only focused on eating the vitamins, you should now pay more attention to the vitamins we apply on our skin for a healthier skin.
