A medical device, "Mirajet," the world's first needless syringe developed by JSK Biomed, satisfies the medical consumers' wishes. I met with Dr. Kyle Koo-Il Seo, the Chief Director of Modelo Dermatologic Clinic, who first applied it to clinical practice and heard more about the device.
- A syringe without a needle sounds unfamiliar. What is the difference between Mirajet and other medical devices?
Needleless syringes are not a new concept. The transdermal drug delivery system that injects drugs directly into the skin has continued to develop. The relatively new system also adopts the technology that shoots the drug into the skin with instantaneously increased pressure without needles as if an air gun does. However, this method had problems with detailed pressure control and the constant dose of the drugs. Moreover, the slow infusion involves severe pain.
Unlike conventional systems, Mirajet is unique because it irradiates lasers rather than gas or air pressure to create the required force. In other words, Mirajet uses the same method of injecting the drug by using pressure. Still, it pushes the drug into the skin by using instantaneous explosive power generated when a laser beam hits the water and reacts.
However, Mirajet doesn't inject a hefty dose of drugs at once. It can adjust the number of injections according to the power intensity control and the number of injections. This technology allows the same amount of the drug to be delivered at regular intervals and an even small amount of the drug to be evenly injected into the dermis layer, so side effects such as bumpy or bruising skins after the treatment can be minimized. The fast infusion speed - about 40 times a second – renders the treatment time much shortened.
- Mirajet was first clinically applied. Would you please explain specific advantages?
Mirajet is unique because it can effectively improve wrinkles around the eyes, nose, and mouth that Botox or filler can't treat. Botox is limited in improving fine lines under the eyes, nose, and mouth, while fillers, although it was a little more effective than Botox, causes a lot of treatment traces such as bruising.
However, with fine control of infusion, Mirajet can inject the drugs evenly as possible with no signs after the treatment. In other words, you can immediately see the improvement with no disruption of daily life. This controlled injection method is the core of skin care treatment and a great advantage for both doctors and patients.
- However, I don't think there would be any traces of the treatment at all.
Correct. Since Mirajet also puts the drug into the skin, the injected spot will turn red on the day of treatment. However, to minimize this redness, our staff carefully adjusts the amount of drug by dividing three treatments into 5 to 6 treatments. So we named it "Secret Mirajet" because it makes marks less apparent.
Of course, we can adjust the number of treatments according to the patient's schedule. When a patient is comfortable with the slight marks, such as a summer holiday, it often proceeds as planned after consulting with the medical staff.
- Do you have any clinical studies related to Mirajet going on?
We are conducting clinical research on secret mirajet, which our hospital newly introduced. We believe that injecting a small dose of the drug by dividing the number of treatments would not reduce the effect. By showing the concrete, objective figures throughout the study, we would like to prove the effectiveness of participants' skin elasticity and moisture level. We expect clinical research results to come out no later than October this year.
- The results may vary depending on the proficiency of the medical staff, no matter how innovative the technology is. Which part should you pay special attention to when performing Mirajet treatment?
Just as people have different appearances, the skin varies in thickness and elasticity depending on the age and body of the person. Therefore, it is always important to keep individual differences in mind to find the best drug combinations and doses.
Specifically speaking, the drugs for mirajet range from hyaluronic acid fillers, “Juvelook” to skin boosters. For people with less resilient aged skin, you can increase the share of hyaluronic acid filler.
